Return to Yarm Roll Call

The following was taken from the Yorkshire Regiment website

Died of wounds 18 Sep 1914 aged 31. Son of William Rhodes Elliff, grocer of High St Yarm and Mary his wife. He had enlisted at Ashton under Lyne. La Ferte-Sous-Jouarre Memorial, France

Yarm1914 believe that Rhodes Elliff, born in Holbeach in Lincolnshire in 1855 and in 1871, aged 16, was boarding in Albert Road, Stockton with the Thomasen family who had just moved from Boston. He married Mary Ann Richardson from Lofthouse in 1880 and settled in the High street, Yarm as a grocer. They had three children, William Rhodes Elliff born in 1881, Edward Elliff born in 1883 and Mabel Elliff born 2 years later. By 1901 Edward and Mabel had left the family, Rhodes was a grocers assistant, Mary Ann worked as a draper from home and William Rhodes Elliff now aged 20 was a solicitors clerk. Mabel was living in Yarm with her grandmother and married John Hutchinson Rapier in 1907. Rhodes Elliff died in 1904 and the following year Edward Elliff became a soldier, signing up on 7 December 1905, having been a butcher. In 1911 he was based within Bhurtpore Military Barracks. On 12 August 1914 he left for France and landed at Le Havre the following day. He records his next of kin as Mrs Mabel Raper.
